1915 年 2 月 20 日，巴拿马—太平洋国际博览会于三藩市开幕。在教育宫的中国展区中，陈列着八十四座以柚木刻成的宝塔模型。这些精致的模型复制了中国最有名的古塔，完整呈现不同时期及地域的建筑风格。 參观博览会的人数达一千八百万; 对曾到访教育宫的访客来说， 这可能是他们第一次全面感受中国建筑魅力的机会。
模型由三百多名上海土山湾工艺院的小工匠制作，每座均经过详细研究。由于二十世 纪的动荡，有些古塔或坍塌或被毁而不复存在，有些则经过修复或改建而面目全非。这批模型既迫真又充满想像力， 为中国古建筑于 20 世纪初的状況留下了珍贵的纪录。
然而这批宝塔在博览会曲终人散后， 却被遗忘达一个世纪之久。亚洲文明博物馆特展 《塔游记》 不仅是 1915 年博览会后八十四座宝塔模型首次全部展出之盛会， 亦同时展 出来自世界各地与土山湾工场有关的文物，为您重现宝塔百多年前由上海远渡至三藩市的奇妙旅程。
