This Monday, 16 February 1942 edition of The Daily Telegraph reports the surrender of British and Australian forces in Singapore at the Ford works at Bukit Timah Hill. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill saw it as the largest capitulation in British military history and urged for fortitude in Britain. "Here is the moment to display the calm and poise combined with grim determination which not so long ago brought us out of the very jaws of death," Churchill said.
