Picturing the Pandemic: A Visual Record of COVID-19 in Singapore (2022)
$35
At the onset of the circuit breaker in Singapore in April 2020, the National Museum of Singapore commissioned five local photographers and two filmmakers to document the pandemic as it was experienced. The submitted photo stories and film were curated and presented in an exhibition titled Picturing the Pandemic: A Visual Record of COVID-19 in Singapore, which was held at the museum from 27 February to 17 October 2021.
Picturing the Pandemic presented a rich and multi-layered account of the pandemic in Singapore, from new ways of living to the experiences of essential workers and vulnerable communities. Through the exhibition, the museum sought to encourage the sharing of collective memory and to provoke a response through the stories made visible.
This publication offers behind-the-scenes insight into the perspectives of the museum's curatorial team as they embarked on a rapid response to document, collect and present a range of experiences of this pivotal period in Singapore’s contemporary history, as and when it happened.
