Archaeological excavations at SAM: Don't Feed the Archaeologists

Archaeological excavations at SAM: Don't Feed the Archaeologists

The first excavations in Singapore that are open for public viewing, several archaeological survey pits will be dug around the premises of Singapore Art Museum prior to their closure for major buillding revamp works. This archaeological impact assessment is undertaken to ensure that no archaeological artefacts or evidence beneath the building, the former SJI building, will be affected by the redevelopment process. It may also reveal more about the histories of the site, which prior to the construction of the building in 1865, was the site of the earliest Roman Catholic church in Singapore, and the site of the largest convict prison settlement in the British Empire.
