SOTA Theatre Faculty's Power Season
May - August 2018
Our season, comprising three adapted western classics and one new local commission, seeks to examine power in its many forms. In doing this, it is only natural that we explore both the uses and abuses of power.
Malala Yousafzai is the youngest Nobel Prize laureate, known for her human rights advocacy especially in the education of women and children. She famously says: “When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” At the age of 19, she rose up to become that voice, and her story of activism and influence in Pakistan is deeply inspiring. Recently, we have also seen other courageous young people stand up against powerful institutions to protest gun violence in America.
In this tumultuous age, the Theatre faculty hopes that our season will guide artists and audiences alike in our considerations and conversations about power, prompting us to think more deeply about what we can and should do with the little or great power we have in our hands.
