Surfing the Waves of Southeast Asian History with the Andayas

This symposium celebrates the careers of Professors Leonard and Barbara Andaya - preeminent figures in the fields of Southeast Asian and Asian history - who have recently retired from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa after decades in the field. Their illustrious careers have spanned over 30 years, during which they have contributed extensive research, and shared their work through prolific writing and teaching. The Andayas will give two lectures on their current work, followed by sharings and reflections from their peers, former colleagues, senior and junior scholars, former students as well as representatives from museums and university presses in Singapore and beyond.

This symposium is co-organised by the ACM, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and National University of Singapore (NUS).

Environment and Society in Early Modern Southeast Asia
The environment has played a significant role in the history of Southeast Asia. Prof. Barbara Andaya will speak on “Dealing with Environmental Challenges in Early Modern Southeast Asia,” and Prof. Leonard Andaya will discuss “Environment, Society, and Networking: Adaptation in Nusatenggara Timur (Eastern Lesser Sundas)”.
